One Corner FirstEcclesiastes 11:4

I Am Waiting For A Free Weekend

This message is for the man holding out for a clear weekend that has not arrived in three years, who wants to begin on an ordinary evening under imperfect conditions

You have been waiting for a clear weekend for about three years.

The plan requires one. Two days, nothing on, nobody needing anything, energy in reserve, and then the job gets done properly in one go rather than in bits.

That is a completely reasonable plan and it is also the reason nothing has happened, and the two things are the same sentence.

Because here is the thing about clear weekends. There are about four a year, at the most. And when one arrives, it does not arrive labeled. It arrives as an ordinary Saturday that turns out to have nothing in it, by which point it is nine in the morning and you are tired from the week, and the correct use of a rare clear day when a man is tired is to rest, and so you rest, and that is not a failure.

So the weekend arrives, and it is used correctly, and the job does not get done. Four times a year. For three years.

That is twelve clear weekends, all of them used sensibly, and the room is unchanged.

The plan has been waiting for conditions that occur, get used for something better, and pass.

I Am Waiting For A Free Weekend

He that observeth the wind

There is a line in Ecclesiastes that is aimed exactly at this, and it is blunt about it.

He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap. (Ecclesiastes 11:4, King James Version)

Observing the wind. Watching the conditions. Looking at the sky and working out whether today is the day.

You are being described by a proverb about conditions rather than a proverb about laziness, and watching for the right day has never once been a fault of character. Ecclesiastes 11:4 names the wind watcher without calling him idle, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so to a man who has been waiting since 2023.

Now look at what happens to the wind watcher, because the verse is precise.

He shall not sow. Not: he sows badly, or late, or less. He does not sow. The result of watching conditions is not a reduced harvest, it is no harvest at all, because the watching does not resolve.

There is no day that is obviously the day. Conditions are always somewhat wrong. That is what conditions are, and the verse knows it, which is why it does not say wait for better weather.

You have a verse that says out loud that the right day does not arrive, and waiting for conditions has never once ended in anything but a field that was never sown. The Spirit of God is the one who says plainly that watching the sky produces nothing, and it is written in Ecclesiastes 11:4 that the one who observes the wind does not sow.

What the plan is actually protecting

Now let me be fair to the plan, because it is doing something and it has been doing it for three years.

It is protecting you from doing the job badly.

If it happens in one clear weekend with energy and time, it gets done properly. If it happens in bits, on weeknights, at the end of a long day, it gets done to a standard no man would choose, and something in you would rather have it undone than done to that standard.

That is not vanity. That is a man who takes his own work seriously, and it is a genuinely good quality in most situations.

You have a standard that is a real thing rather than an excuse, and taking work seriously has never once been the same fault as putting it off. The Holy Spirit is the one who is fair about why a man has waited, and Ecclesiastes 11:4 does not accuse the wind watcher of anything except not sowing.

But look at what the standard has actually produced.

Not a properly done job. An undone one. Three years of the highest standard, applied to nothing, in a room that has stayed exactly the same, and the standard cannot be met by nothing.

A job done to seventy percent on four weeknights is seventy percent better than a job done to nothing across three years.

You are able to have seventy percent of something rather than a hundred percent of nothing, and a standard has never once been able to improve a job that never happened. The Spirit of God is the one who puts the arithmetic in front of a man, and it is written in Ecclesiastes 11:4 that the wind watcher does not reap.

And this, plainly, in these words. That room is not a report on you. Not on your standards, not on your capability, not on your work. A room that has waited three years for a clear weekend is not a verdict on the man waiting, and I am not going to allow it to be read that way while he is sitting in it on a Wednesday.

You are a man whose worth was settled a long way from a corner of a room, and an unstarted job has never once been a statement about the man who has not started it. Ecclesiastes 11:4 names the watching without condemning the watcher in Ecclesiastes 11, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the room with you.

An ordinary evening, twenty minutes

So here is the assignment, and the word ordinary is the whole of it.

Pick one corner on an ordinary evening this week, set a timer for twenty minutes, and stop when it goes.

Ordinary. Not a good evening. Not one where you feel like it. A Wednesday, tired, with the week half done, which is the condition the verse is actually describing.

Twenty minutes on a timer, out loud, in one corner.

You are sowing in conditions the verse says never improve, and an ordinary tired Wednesday has never once been a worse day to begin than one that has not arrived. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man who starts on a day that is not the day, and Ecclesiastes 11:4 says the one who watches the wind does not sow.

And then the part that will genuinely bother you.

It will be done to about seventy percent. You will be able to see, immediately, three things that would have been better with more time. That is real and I am not going to pretend it away.

Leave them. Stop when the timer goes. Come back on Friday for another twenty minutes.

Because seventy percent that exists can be improved on Friday, and a hundred percent that has not happened cannot be improved by anything at all.

You are putting something into existence that can be improved later, and a job at seventy percent has never once been worth less than a plan at a hundred. The Spirit of God is the one present in imperfect work on an ordinary evening, and it is written in Ecclesiastes 11:4 that the one who regards the clouds does not reap.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over a man who has been waiting three years for two clear days.

You are able to begin under conditions that are not right, and a clear weekend has never once been the thing that was actually missing. I am not telling you the standard was wrong and I am not asking you to do a bad job. Ecclesiastes 11:4 says the one who watches the wind does not sow and does not call him lazy, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is in that room now.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have twenty minutes on an ordinary Wednesday, and twelve clear weekends used correctly have never once been able to change a room that was waiting for a thirteenth. The Spirit of God is the one present in imperfect work, and it is written in Ecclesiastes 11:4 that the one who observes the wind does not sow.

An ordinary evening. One corner. Twenty minutes.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Clear weekend I keep waiting for, you are not what this room needed, and you have never once arrived labeled. Ecclesiastes 11:4 says the one who watches the wind does not sow, so by the Holy Spirit I set a timer on an ordinary Wednesday, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Standard that would rather have it undone, you have no claim on this corner. The written word says plainly that watching the conditions produces no harvest at all, and by the Spirit of God I do twenty minutes to seventy percent and stop.
  3. Father, Your word says he that observeth the wind shall not sow and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap. By Your Spirit I stop watching the sky, and I work one corner on an ordinary tired evening this week.
