I Have Been Planning This For Two Years

You have been thinking about that room for two years and it looks exactly the same as it did.

And the thinking has not been idle. That is the thing worth saying at the start. You know the measurements. You have worked out three arrangements and rejected two of them for real reasons. You know exactly why the obvious solution does not work, and you could explain it clearly to somebody in about four minutes.

The plan is good. It is genuinely a good plan.

The room is unchanged.

I want to name the thing that has quietly happened, because it happens to careful men constantly and it is almost never noticed.

Planning has become the activity.

It started as preparation for doing something, and somewhere in the two years it turned into the thing itself. It has its own satisfactions. It happens in the evening, in a chair, with a coffee, and it produces a feeling of progress that is genuinely indistinguishable from progress while it is happening.

And it never runs out, because a plan can always be improved and a room can always be reconsidered, so there is no natural point at which planning finishes and moving starts.

So tonight we are going to move things with no plan at all, for twenty minutes, and it is going to feel wrong.

In all labor there is profit

There is a proverb about this that is harder than most people expect.

In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury. (Proverbs 14:23, King James Version)

Two halves and they are set against each other.

Labor produces profit. Talk produces penury, which means poverty. That is a strong word and the proverb picked it deliberately.

You are somebody Scripture says has profit waiting inside actual labor, and thinking about work has never once been counted as the work. Proverbs 14:23 puts profit on one side and poverty on the other, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so to a man who has been planning a room since 2024.

Now I want to be careful, because the lazy reading of that proverb is anti-thought, and Scripture is not anti-thought. There is an entire book of Proverbs about thinking carefully.

The talk of the lips in that verse is not thinking. It is discussion that has replaced action. It is the specific thing where the conversation about a job becomes a substitute for the job, and the proverb is not warning about planning too much. It is warning about planning instead.

You are able to keep the thinking and add the doing, and careful preparation has never once been the thing that proverb was aimed at. The Spirit of God is the one who tells the difference between preparation and substitution, and it is written in Proverbs 14:23 that profit sits inside the labor itself.

Why the plan cannot finish

Now the practical part, and this is the piece that will actually free you.

A plan for a room cannot be finished, and here is why. A room is not a problem with a correct answer. It is a set of trade-offs, and every arrangement gives something up, and the moment you consider a fourth arrangement you can see what the third one costs.

So there is no version where you sit down one evening and the plan is done. There will always be one more consideration, because the material is inexhaustible.

Which means waiting for a finished plan is waiting for a thing that does not occur.

You are waiting for something that cannot arrive, and a finished plan for a room has never once existed anywhere. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man that he has been standing at a door that does not open, and Proverbs 14:23 puts the profit inside the labor rather than in front of it.

And here is the practical fact that makes tonight possible, and it is the one thing two years of planning cannot give you.

A room tells you things when the furniture moves that it will never tell you while it stands still.

Two years of arrangements have been run in your head against a model of that room, and the model is wrong in about four small ways that only become apparent when something is physically in a different place. Everybody's model is wrong. That is what models are.

Twenty minutes of moving things gives you information that two more years of planning cannot produce.

You are able to get information tonight that no amount of thinking could have given you, and a room has never once been fully knowable from a chair. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in the actual work rather than in the preparation for it, and it is written in Proverbs 14:23 that in all labor there is profit.

And this, plainly, in these words. That room is not a report on you. Not on your carefulness, not on your competence, not on whether you get things done. A room that has not changed in two years is not a verdict on the man who has been thinking about it, and I am not going to allow it to be read that way while he is sitting in the chair.

You are a man whose worth was settled a long way from a floor plan, and an unchanged room has never once been a statement about the man who lives in it. Proverbs 14:23 puts profit inside labor in Proverbs 14, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the room with you.

Twenty minutes, no plan

So here is the assignment, and the phrase no plan is the whole of it.

Pick one corner, set a timer for twenty minutes, and move things in it with no plan at all before the timer goes.

One corner. Not the room. Pick it fast, in about four seconds, and do not pick the one the plan is about, because the plan will take over.

Timer for twenty minutes. Out loud, on a phone, wherever you can hear it.

You are working to a clock rather than to a specification, and twenty minutes with a timer has never once been the same activity as an evening of considering. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in a man's hands rather than only in his head, and Proverbs 14:23 puts the profit inside the actual labor.

Then move things with no plan.

Physically. Pick something up and put it somewhere else. Turn a chair. Move a lamp. Take one thing out of the corner entirely and put it in another room. Do not evaluate. Do not step back and assess. Do not decide whether it is better.

The point is not to improve the corner. The point is that the room starts producing information, and information only comes out when things are in different places.

When the timer goes, stop, wherever it is. Do not finish. Do not tidy up the state you have left it in. Stop.

You are letting a room tell you things it has been unable to say for two years, and twenty minutes of moving has never once produced less than twenty months of thinking.
