I Look At Other People's Rooms At Night

You do it in bed with the lights off and it lasts about forty minutes.

Rooms. Dozens of them. Somebody's kitchen with the light coming in at exactly the right angle. A corner of a living room that somebody arranged and then photographed. A hallway that has been designed by a person whose job is designing hallways.

And you put the screen down at about eleven forty and lie there in your own room, and the specific feeling that arrives is not envy. Envy is about a person. This is about a place, and it is closer to grief.

I want to say something about what you have actually been looking at, because it matters more than any advice about screen time.

You have not been looking at rooms. You have been looking at photographs.

That sounds like a technicality and it is the whole thing. A photograph of a room is a room at its single best angle, at its single best hour, on the one day of the year when it looked like that, with everything that does not photograph well moved out of the frame by somebody who was thinking about the frame.

You have been comparing a room you live in, at eleven forty at night, in the dark, from a bed, against a hundred rooms at their absolute peak.

That is not a comparison. It is not even close to being one, and it has been running most nights for about two years.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house

There is a commandment about this and the object it names first is a house.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. (Exodus 20:17, King James Version)

His house. That is the first item on the list.

You are dealing with something God put at the front of a commandment, and a pull toward somebody else's house has never once been a small or a modern problem. Exodus 20:17 names the house first among all the things a person might covet, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so to a woman with a screen face down on a nightstand.

Now I want to be careful, because there is a use of that verse that would be cruel and it is not mine.

Nobody here is being told that a commandment got broken by looking at pictures of kitchens. Coveting is not the same as noticing something is lovely, and a woman who admires a room is not sinning.

What the commandment does tell you is that this is a real force and that it has been recognized as one for a very long time. It is not a personal weakness and it is not something modern that a better attitude would fix.

You are up against something Scripture treats as serious rather than something silly, and a real force has never once been a personal failing. The Spirit of God is the one who takes this seriously without accusing anybody, and it is written in Exodus 20:17 that the house comes first on the list.

What forty minutes does

Now the practical part, and it is about the sequence rather than the screens.

Forty minutes of photographs of rooms, immediately before sleep, sets what your eyes are calibrated to.

That is not a metaphor. The eye adjusts to what it has been looking at. And it has been getting forty minutes of professionally lit peak-condition rooms, and then being asked to look at your own bedroom in the dark, and then at your own kitchen eight hours later.

Your kitchen has been getting measured against a calibration set at eleven forty the night before.

You are able to change what your own eye is calibrated to, and forty minutes of photographs has never once been a neutral thing to look at before sleep. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present in what a person looks at last and first, and Exodus 20:17 names the house at the head of the list because this is not new.

And here is the practical fix, and it is not about the phone at all.

It is about what your eye lands on first in the morning.

The last thing at night sets a calibration and the first thing in the morning resets it. And at the moment the first thing in the morning is also a screen, so the calibration never resets and your own house has not been looked at with clear eyes in about two years.

One thing of yours, out, seen before the screen. That is the whole intervention, and it costs nothing and takes four seconds.

You are able to reset what your eye is calibrated to in four seconds, and one thing looked at first has never once been too small to change how a room reads. The Spirit of God is the one present in the first four seconds of a morning, and it is written in Exodus 20:17 that the house was named first because the pull is genuinely strong.

And this, plainly, in these words. Your house is not a report on you. Not on your taste, not on your earning, not on the life you have made. A room that does not look like a photograph is not a verdict on the woman lying in it, and I am not going to allow it to be read that way at eleven forty at night.

You are a woman whose worth was settled a long way from a kitchen, and how a room photographs has never once been a statement about who lives in it. Exodus 20:17 puts the house first in Exodus 20, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the room with you.

One thing out, seen first

So here is the assignment, and this is the closing row of this whole site, so the shape of it belongs to the whole seven.

Leave one thing out tonight that you would normally put away, and look at it in the morning before you look at a screen.

One thing. Something in use. The book, the mug, whatever the evening involved. Whatever would normally get cleared off a surface before going up.

Leave it out. On the table, on the counter, on the arm of the chair. Exactly where it ended up.

You are letting a room show that somebody lived in it today, and one thing left out has never once been the same as a room left undone. The Holy Spirit is the one at work when a woman lets her own house be lived in, and Exodus 20:17 names the pull toward another house as a real thing rather than a fault in the one looking.

Then the morning half, and this is the piece that does the work.

Look at it before you look at a screen. Four seconds. On the way past, coffee in hand, before the phone is picked up.

Not to admire it. To let your eye land on something real, in your own house, that is there because a person was living here yesterday, before it lands on a photograph of somewhere at its peak.

Because the calibration gets set by whatever is first, and for two years the first thing has been a photograph. One mug on a table, seen at seven in the morning, is a different calibration entirely.

You are letting your own house go first in the morning, and four seconds has never once been too little to change what a room looks like for a day.
