Somebody Is ComingMatthew 18:5

My Son Asked If His Friend Could Come

This message is for the father afraid his child will be embarrassed by their home in front of a friend, who wants his son to invite people in without inheriting his father's shame

He asked at dinner and he asked lightly.

Can my friend come over on Saturday. That is all he said, and he said it the way an eleven year old says something he has not thought about at all, and then he carried on eating.

And something went through you that had nothing to do with Saturday.

You saw the front room through an eleven year old's eyes. You saw the friend's house, which you have been to once, briefly, at a drop-off. You did an entire calculation in about a second and a half about what your son is going to feel when his friend walks in, and the calculation was not good.

So you said maybe. And he said fine and carried on eating and has not raised it since.

I want to say something at the start and I want to be direct about it, because this is the article's whole subject.

He had not thought about the room. Not once.

The comparison you did in that second and a half was yours. It came from your history, from a house you grew up in, from something that happened to you at eleven that you have never told anybody about. It is a real thing and it belongs to you.

And the risk this week is that it stops belonging to you.

Because a boy learns what to be ashamed of by watching an adult be ashamed of it, and there is no faster way to teach it than a father who says maybe.

My Son Asked If His Friend Could Come

Whoso shall receive one such little child

There is a line in Matthew where the Lord makes a child the measure of something, and it is more startling than it first sounds.

And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. (Matthew 18:5, King James Version)

Receiving a child. That is the act being described, and He attaches Himself to it.

You are being asked to receive a child in His name this week, and a house has never once been part of what that instruction required. Matthew 18:5 puts the whole weight on the receiving, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so to a father who said maybe at a dinner table.

Now look at what is not there, and it is the same absence that keeps showing up.

There is no standard attached. No description of a house, a room, a table, a setting. The act named is receiving a child, and the value put on it is enormous, and the conditions attached to it are none.

That means an eleven year old walking into your front room on Saturday is the thing that verse describes, in your house, this week, whatever the room looks like.

You have a chance this week to do a thing Christ put His own name on, and the state of a room has never once been a condition on receiving a child. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary Saturday into what Matthew 18:5 is talking about, and it is written there that the receiving is the whole of it.

What a boy actually learns

Now the hard part, and I am going to say it plainly because a father can take it.

Your son does not currently have this. That is the good news and it is also the thing at risk.

At eleven, a child mostly has not learned to rank houses. He knows his friend's place is bigger, in the way he knows his friend has a different color car, which is to say as a fact with no weight on it. Weight has to be taught.

And the teaching is not done with words. It is done with hesitation. It is done with a father saying maybe in a particular tone, and then not raising it again, and a boy filing something away that he will not be able to name for twenty years.

You are able to keep something from being handed down this week, and a boy has never once had to inherit a father's shame about a house. The Holy Spirit is the one who breaks a thing at the point where it would pass on, and Matthew 18:5 attaches Christ Himself to the receiving of one such child.

And here is what actually happens on Saturday if you say yes.

Two eleven year olds are going to be in one room for three hours and neither of them will look at the furniture. They will look at whatever they are doing. That is what eleven year olds do, and it is not naivety, it is that the room genuinely is not the point to them.

The only person in the house who will be thinking about the room is you, and that is precisely the thing that can be put down.

You are able to be the only one in the house not thinking about the room, and a Saturday afternoon has never once been about the walls of the place it happened in. The Spirit of God is the one present when two children are absorbed in something, and it is written in Matthew 18:5 that receiving one such child is receiving Him.

And this, plainly. That house is not a report on you. Not on your work, not on your provision, not on what you have managed to give a boy. A front room that a man is nervous about is not a verdict on the father, and I am not going to allow it to be read that way while he is standing in the kitchen deciding.

You are a man whose worth was settled a long way from a living room, and where a family lives has never once been a statement about the man who provides for it. Matthew 18:5 puts the whole value on the receiving in Matthew 18, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the kitchen with you.

Say yes, and be in the room

So here is the assignment, and the second half is the one that matters most.

Say yes this week and let the friend come without doing anything to the room first, and be in the room when they arrive rather than out of the way.

First, the yes. Plain, this week, with no conditions and no tone. Raise it yourself, at dinner, and say Saturday works.

Then nothing. No jobs, no fixing, no tidying anything for a child who is not going to look. The room on Saturday is what the room is.

You are handing a boy a plain yes, and a father's answer has never once needed a house to be ready before it could be given. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies a man's voice at a dinner table, and Matthew 18:5 attaches the Lord Himself to the receiving of a child.

Now the second half.

Be in the room when they arrive. Not upstairs. Not busy in the kitchen. Not making yourself scarce, which is what a man does when he does not want to be part of a moment he is nervous about.

Be in the living room, doing something ordinary, when two boys come through the door. Say hello to the friend. Ask him one question. Then leave them to it.

Because what your son will remember is not the furniture. It is whether his father was in the room or out of it, and that is the thing that teaches him what this house is.

You are showing a boy a father who is at home in his own house, and being in the room has never once been a smaller lesson than anything a man could say. The Spirit of God is the one present when a father stays where he is, and it is written in Matthew 18:5 that whoever receives one such child receives Christ.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a father standing in a kitchen after a boy asked lightly at dinner.

You are able to hand your son a house rather than an apology, and a boy has never once needed his father to be ashamed with him. I am not telling you the comparison is silly and I am not going to pretend the history behind it is nothing. Matthew 18:5 attaches the Lord Himself to receiving a child and attaches no standard to a room, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is in that house on Saturday.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have one week to stop something from being handed down, and a thing a man carries has never once been obliged to reach the next generation. The Spirit of God is the one who breaks a thing at the point of passing, and it is written in Matthew 18:5 that whoever receives one such child receives Him.

Say yes. Change nothing. Be in the room.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Calculation I did in a second and a half at dinner, you are not being handed to my son, and you have never once belonged to him. Matthew 18:5 puts Christ Himself into the receiving of a child and names no standard, so by the Holy Spirit I say yes this week, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Instinct to make myself scarce on Saturday, you have no claim on my living room. The written word attaches the Lord to the receiving and attaches nothing to the house, and by the Spirit of God I am in the room when that door goes.
  3. Father, You said whoever receives one such little child in Your name receives You. Your word puts the whole weight on the receiving, so by Your Spirit I open my door to an eleven year old this week exactly as things stand.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
