Nothing MatchesGenesis 2:24

Two Of Everything And No Pair

This message is for the man whose remarried household merged two complete homes into one, with duplicates of everything and matching nothing, who wants one house instead of two overlaid

There are two of almost everything in your house and not one pair.

Two kettles, and only one gets used. Two sets of dishes in two different cabinets. Two couches, one in the front room and one that got put in the back because there was nowhere else. Two of the small useful things that nobody needs two of, in two different drawers, in two different rooms, because each of them has always lived in a different place.

That is what happens when two complete households become one. Nobody warns anybody about this part. There is a great deal of good advice available about children and about money and almost none about the fact that you now live inside two overlaid floor plans.

And the strange thing is what it does to the house.

It does not look poor. It looks doubled. It looks like a place where two lives are being run in parallel under one roof, and even people who cannot say why can feel something of it when they come in.

I want to be careful with this, because both of those households were real. There were years in each of them. The dishes in the second cabinet are not clutter. They are somebody's other life, and it was a whole life, and the person who lived it is now in your kitchen.

So this is not going to be an article about getting rid of half of it. Nobody is throwing anybody's other life into a bag tonight.

It is going to be about one shelf, and about the difference between two houses overlaid and one house made out of both.

Two Of Everything And No Pair

They shall be one flesh

There is the oldest line about marriage there is, and it is about assembly.

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. (Genesis 2:24, King James Version)

One flesh. Not two people who agree. Not two lives conducted politely alongside each other. One thing, made out of two things that were separate.

You are one household by the word of God rather than by how the drawers are arranged, and a house holding two histories has never once been two houses. Genesis 2:24 makes one out of two by declaration rather than by process, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so in a kitchen with two of everything in it.

Now notice the verb in the middle, because it is doing work that people skip.

Cleave. That is not a soft word. It means to stick fast, to be joined so that separating would tear. It is a word about two things being made into one thing at the seam, and it does not describe a tidy operation.

Anybody who has merged two households knows the seam. It is real. It runs through the cabinets and the drawers and the question of which kettle.

You have a seam in your house that Scripture already knows about, and a joining that is visible has never once been a joining that failed. The Spirit of God is the one who makes one out of two, and it is written in Genesis 2:24 that the word for it is cleaving rather than merging quietly.

Two overlaid, or one made of both

Here is the distinction I actually came with, and it is worth holding onto.

There is a difference between two houses lying on top of each other and one house made out of two.

Two overlaid looks like this. Her things are in these rooms, his things are in those. Each drawer belongs to a history. Nothing has been put together with anything, because putting them together feels like a decision somebody has not yet been asked to make.

One made of both looks different, and the difference is not quantity. It is arrangement. It is things from both histories sitting together, put there deliberately, by somebody, on purpose.

You are able to make one house out of two without losing either history, and an arrangement has never once required anybody to give something up. The Holy Spirit is the one who joins without erasing, and Genesis 2:24 makes one flesh out of two people who each arrived with a whole life behind them.

And here is why the arranging matters more than the sorting.

The children in that house are reading it. Not consciously. But a young person moving between rooms where each drawer has a side is learning something about whether this is one family or an arrangement, and they are learning it from the drawers rather than from anything anybody says at dinner.

One shelf with both households on it says something that no conversation says as fast.

You are teaching a household what it is every day without opening your mouth, and a shelf has never once been too small a place for that to be said. The Spirit of God is the one at work in what a house quietly communicates, and it is written in Genesis 2:24 that two become one thing rather than one arrangement.

And this, plainly. The state of that house is not a report on either of you. Two of everything is what a merged household looks like in its early years, and it is not evidence that anything is failing. I am not going to let a doubled kitchen be read as a doubtful marriage while we are standing in it.

You are looking at a merger rather than at a warning, and two kettles have never once been a verdict on a household. Genesis 2:24 declares one flesh without describing a tidy process in Genesis 2, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the kitchen with both of you.

Three things, from both, on one shelf

So here is the assignment, and it wants two people if two are available.

Put three things from both households on one shelf together on purpose tonight, and stand back and look at it with somebody.

Three objects. At least one from each history. The small thing from her mother's house. The thing that has been in his family since before either of you. Something the children brought from the old place.

They will not match. Nothing about this article has been about matching.

You are free to put two histories side by side without a single thing agreeing, and matching has never once been what made a house one house. The Holy Spirit is the one who joins two lives without flattening either, and Genesis 2:24 makes one flesh out of two by declaring it so.

Put them on one shelf, spaced deliberately, arranged rather than set down.

You are putting two histories on one surface by hand, and three objects placed together on purpose has never once been a small thing in a house that has been running in parallel. The Holy Spirit is the one at work when two lives are arranged into one, and Genesis 2:24 puts the making of one flesh in a declaration rather than in a long negotiation.

Then stand back and look at it with somebody in the house. Your wife. A child. Whoever is nearest.

Do not make a speech about it. Do not explain what it means. Stand there, look at the shelf, and let whoever is beside you look at it too.

The point is that a second person sees it and knows, without being told, that somebody in this house put those three things together on purpose.

You are letting somebody else see a decision that was made about this family, and a shelf looked at by two people has never once said less than a conversation about it. The Spirit of God is the one present when a household sees itself as one thing, and it is written in Genesis 2:24 that they shall be one flesh.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over a man in a kitchen with two of everything in it.

You are one household now, and a room holding the furniture of two lives has never once been two houses pretending. I am not telling anybody to get rid of anything and I am not going to call two kettles a problem. Genesis 2:24 makes one flesh out of two whole lives, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is in that kitchen now.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have a shelf and two histories, and a seam that is visible has never once been a joining that did not take. The Spirit of God is the one who makes one thing out of two without erasing either, and it is written in Genesis 2:24 that the word for it is cleaving.

Three things. Both houses. One shelf. And somebody standing beside you.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Two of everything in two different drawers, you are one household tonight, and you have never once been two houses lying on top of each other. Genesis 2:24 makes one flesh out of two whole lives, so by the Holy Spirit I put three of you on one shelf, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that arranging costs a history, you have no claim on this shelf. The written word joins two without erasing either one, and by the Spirit of God I set them side by side and leave them there.
  3. Father, You said a man shall cleave to his wife and they shall be one flesh, and Your word makes that one thing by saying so. By Your Spirit I put both of our houses on one shelf tonight, and I call this one home.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
