I Have Not Moved One Thing In Three Years

Three years and nothing has moved.

Her chair is where it was. The thing on the windowsill is at the same angle. There is a cardigan over the back of something and it is exactly where she put it on a day you could probably name.

And people have views about this. Some of them have said so. Most of them have been kind about it and one or two have not, and all of them have missed what is actually going on, so let me try.

It is not that you think she is coming back.

It is that this room is currently the last thing in the world that is arranged by her. Everything else has moved on. The bank changed the name. The mail stopped coming. People stopped asking after her about eighteen months ago. And in one room in one house there is still an arrangement that her hands made, and it is the only one left anywhere.

So of course nothing has moved. Moving something is the one remaining place where she can be reduced, and you have declined, correctly, for three years.

I am not going to ask you to move anything of hers. Not one thing, not tonight, not ever on my account.

I am going to say something about what has quietly happened to you inside that arrangement.

A time to keep, and a time to cast away

There is a line in Ecclesiastes that gets used to hurry people along and says the opposite of what it is usually made to say.

A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away. (Ecclesiastes 3:6, King James Version)

A time to keep. It is in there, listed, with the same weight as everything else in that chapter.

You are inside a time that Scripture names as a real one, and keeping has never once been the wrong half of that verse to be standing in. Ecclesiastes 3:6 puts keeping and casting away side by side without ranking them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so to a man in a room that has not changed in three years.

Now notice what the verse does not do, because this is where it gets misused.

It does not say how long a time is. It does not say that the time to keep comes first and is short and gives way to the other one on a schedule. It lists two times and it does not date either of them.

Anybody who quotes that verse at you to suggest three years is long enough is adding something to it that is not there.

You have a time whose length nobody else is authorized to declare, and a season of keeping has never once had a deadline written on it in Scripture. The Spirit of God is the one who sets the times rather than anybody with a view, and it is written in Ecclesiastes 3:6 that there is a time to keep and no length given for it.

What has happened to you in there

Now the thing I actually came to say, and it is not about her things.

There is nothing of yours in that room.

Look at it properly. Every object in there is either hers or joint or was hers before it was anybody's. And in three years nothing has been added, because adding something felt like the same category of act as moving something, and it is not.

Which means a man is living inside a room in which he does not appear.

You have preserved her perfectly and you have quietly gone missing from your own front room, and nobody has said that to you because it does not look like anything from the outside.

You are able to appear in your own front room, and adding something of yours has never once been the same act as removing something of hers. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man what has happened to him rather than to the room, and Ecclesiastes 3:6 names a time to keep without saying that the keeper must disappear.

And here is the thing about her, and I want to say it carefully.

She would not have wanted a museum with you standing outside it.

I do not know her and I am not going to pretend to. But I know what a woman who arranged a room for forty years wanted that room to be, and it was not a room with nothing of her husband's in it and him not sitting in it.

You are able to keep her arrangement and be in it, and a preserved room has never once required the man who lives there to be absent from it. The Spirit of God is the one present with a man in a room that has not changed, and it is written in Ecclesiastes 3:6 that keeping is a real season and no length is given.

And this, plainly, in these words. That room is not a report on you. Not on your grief, not on whether three years is too long, not on whether you are managing. A room exactly as she left it is not a verdict on the man in it, and I am not going to allow it to be read that way while he is sitting in there.

You are a man whose worth was settled a long way from a front room, and how a house has been kept has never once been a measure of how a man has grieved. Ecclesiastes 3:6 lists a time to keep in Ecclesiastes 3, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the room with you.

One thing of yours, and nothing of hers

So here is the assignment, and the second half of it is a promise rather than an instruction.

Move one thing that is yours in that room tonight, and leave everything of hers exactly where it is.

One thing of yours. Bring it in if it is not in there. The book you are reading. Your glasses. A chair from another room, moved so it faces her chair rather than facing away from it. A cup that is yours.

Something that means a man lives in that room, on an ordinary evening, without ceremony.

You are putting yourself into a room you have been keeping, and one thing of your own has never once disturbed anything of hers. The Holy Spirit is the one at work when a man appears in his own front room, and Ecclesiastes 3:6 names a time to keep with no end date attached.

And nothing of hers moves. That is the promise.

The cardigan stays. The angle on the windowsill stays. Her chair stays exactly where it is, and if anybody ever suggests otherwise to you, they are not reading that verse and they do not have the authority.

Because the direction matters more than anything else here. If tonight involved one thing of hers being moved it would not happen, and it should not happen, and there is no need for it to happen for you to be present in your own house.

You are adding rather than removing, and a room with one of your own things in it has never once been a room she was reduced in. The Spirit of God is the one who is present when a man sits down in a room he has been standing at the edge of, and it is written in Ecclesiastes 3:6 that there is a time to keep and it is a real time.
