Nobody Has Looked In That Photograph Box

There is a box and nobody has opened it in about ten years.

It is not lost. You could put your hand on it in about forty seconds. It is a cardboard box, on a shelf or under something, and it has several hundred photographs in it from before everybody had a phone.

Weddings. A holiday nobody has mentioned in twenty years. Your parents when they were younger than you are. A dog. About six people who are dead. Your own children at ages they cannot remember being.

And here is the thing that is genuinely strange about it, and worth looking at directly.

That box is the most valuable object in your house and it has had no attention at all for a decade.

Not because anybody decided it was unimportant. Because looking at photographs became a thing that requires setting up. It needs an occasion, or an evening, or a reason, and those do not arrive, and so a box that would take about four minutes to change a whole evening has sat there for ten years.

I am not going to ask you to go through it. That is the mistake every version of this advice makes, and going through it is a project, and projects do not happen.

Three of them. Out. Standing up. That is the whole thing.

A book of remembrance was written

There is a line in Malachi about a record being kept, and it is unexpectedly specific about what happens to it.

Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. (Malachi 3:16, King James Version)

A book of remembrance was written before him.

You are the keeper of a record that Scripture treats as a serious thing, and a written remembrance has never once been meant to sit closed. Malachi 3:16 has a record written and kept before Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so to a man with a box on a shelf.

Now look at what produces that book, because it is the part that will change how you see your own box.

They spake often one to another. That is the activity. People talking to each other, repeatedly, and the record follows from the talking rather than the other way round.

The book exists because a conversation kept happening. It is not an archive that replaced the conversation. It is the residue of one.

You have a record that came out of people talking rather than one that was meant to sit in a box, and a remembrance has never once been kept by being stored. The Spirit of God is the one who hearkens and hears while people speak often to one another, and it is written in Malachi 3:16 that the book followed the speaking.

Three photographs restart the talking

Now the practical part, and it is the reason for the specific number.

A box of three hundred photographs is unusable. That is a real fact and it is not about anybody's discipline. Three hundred is too many to look at, so looking at any of them requires deciding to look at all of them, and that decision does not get made.

Three is entirely different. Three photographs standing on a surface get looked at by everybody who walks past, with no decision required from anybody.

And the effect that has is not about the photographs. It is about the talking.

You are able to restart a conversation with three objects, and three photographs standing up have never once needed an occasion arranged around them. The Holy Spirit is the one at work when a household starts talking about its own people, and Malachi 3:16 has the book written because they spoke often one to another.

And here is what I want to say about the six people in that box who are dead, because it is the real weight in this.

Nobody in your house has said their names out loud in a long time.

Not from coldness. Because there is no occasion, and saying a dead person's name in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday feels like it needs a reason, and so the names go unsaid for years and the people quietly recede.

Three photographs on a shelf give a household a reason to say a name on an ordinary Tuesday. Somebody walks past, picks one up, and asks who that is. And that is the whole mechanism, and it cannot happen while the box is shut.

You are able to give a household a reason to say a name, and a photograph standing in a kitchen has never once needed a reason arranged around it. The Spirit of God is the one who hears when people speak often one to another, and it is written in Malachi 3:16 that a book was written for those who thought upon His name.

And this, plainly, in these words. That box is not a report on you. Not on how much you have cared, not on your family, not on whether you have kept things properly. Ten years of a closed box is not a verdict on the man who owns it, and I am not going to allow it to be read that way while he is reaching for the shelf.

You are a man whose worth was settled a long way from a cardboard box, and ten years of not opening one has never once been a measure of anybody's love. Malachi 3:16 puts the record in front of God in Malachi 3, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the room with you.

Three out, standing up

So here is the assignment.

Open the photograph box tonight, take out three, and stand them where the household will see them every day.

Open it. Do not go through it. Take the lid off, look at the top layer, and take three off the top.

Off the top. Not the best three. Not a representative three. Whatever is on the top layer, because choosing is the thing that turns this into a project.

You are taking three off the top rather than choosing three out of three hundred, and the top layer has never once been a worse three than a carefully selected one. The Holy Spirit is the one at work when a lid comes off after ten years, and Malachi 3:16 records a book written because people kept talking.

Then stand them up where the household passes. The kitchen counter. The shelf by the door. The top of the bookcase.

Standing, leaning against the wall if they need to, no frames required and nothing on any wall. Frames are a project and this is not one.

And then leave them there and do not explain them to anybody. Somebody in that house will pick one up within about a week and ask a question, and the question is the entire point of tonight, and it will not arrive if you have already delivered a speech about the box.

You are letting three photographs produce a question, and a face standing on a counter has never once needed anybody to introduce it. The Spirit of God is the one who hears a household speaking often one to another, and it is written in Malachi 3:16 that the book of remembrance followed the talking.
