Nothing Matches1 Peter 4:10

Everything I Own Was Somebody Else's First

This message is for the woman furnished entirely out of what other people were finished with, who feels she is living inside other people's taste and wants a house that reads as hers

Go round the room in your head and name where each thing came from.

The couch was your sister's when she moved. The table came from the house clearance after your aunt. The chair was in the apartment when you took it over. The lamp was a gift from somebody at work eleven years ago. The bookcase came from a neighbor who was going to put it out.

Almost nothing in that room was chosen. It arrived.

And the feeling that goes with that, if you are honest at eleven at night, is that you are living inside other people's taste. That the room is a record of what other people were finished with. That if somebody walked in and asked what your style was, you would have no answer, because none of it was a decision.

I want to take that apart, because it contains one true thing and one false thing bolted together, and the false one has been doing a lot of damage.

The true thing is that you did not choose it. That is accurate, and nothing more.

The false thing is what you have been reading into it, which is that a house you did not choose is a house that is not yours, and that a room assembled from what people gave is a lesser room than one bought in a single afternoon.

That second part is not true, and by the end of this we are going to have looked at it properly. Then we are going to put three of those things on one shelf on purpose, which is the first act of choosing you will have done in that room in a long time.

Everything I Own Was Somebody Else's First

As every man hath received the gift

There is a verse about gifts that is not about objects and applies to them anyway.

As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. (1 Peter 4:10, King James Version)

The word I want is manifold.

Manifold means many-folded. Various. Coming in a great many different forms rather than one. And Peter attaches it to grace, which means the grace of God is described, by name, as something that arrives in a large number of different shapes and does not match.

You are living in a house furnished the way Scripture describes grace arriving, and a room in many different shapes has never once been a room in a lesser condition. 1 Peter 4:10 calls the grace of God manifold, which is many-formed by definition, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so in a room where nothing came from the same place.

Now look at the mechanism in that verse, because it is the whole of your living room.

Every person receives something. Then they hand it on to somebody else. That is the entire economy Peter is describing, and the word for the people doing it is stewards.

A steward is somebody who holds and uses what was put into their hands by another. Not an owner in the first instance. A holder, a user, a person entrusted with a thing that came from elsewhere and who is fully expected to use it.

You are a steward of what has come into your hands, and holding what somebody handed over has never once been a lesser way to have a house. The Spirit of God is the one who moves things from hand to hand across a community, and it is written in 1 Peter 4:10 that receiving and passing on is the ordinary shape of grace.

A record of who showed up

Let me offer you a different way to read that room, and I want you to test it against the facts rather than take it as encouragement.

Walk the room again, and this time name the person rather than the object.

Your sister, when she moved. Your aunt's house, after. Whoever left the chair. The person at work eleven years ago who thought of you. The neighbor who could have put a bookcase on the sidewalk and knocked on your door instead.

That is not a list of things you could not afford. That is a list of people who turned up.

You are surrounded by evidence of people who thought about you, and a handed-down room has never once been a record of what was lacking. The Holy Spirit is the one who moves people to hand things over, and 1 Peter 4:10 makes exactly that movement the ordinary way grace gets around.

Now hold the alternative beside it, honestly.

A room furnished in one afternoon from one place matches. It is coherent. And it is a record of one transaction on one day, and there is nobody in it.

I am not going to be sniffy about that, because plenty of people have one and many of them are lovely rooms and there is no virtue in having less. But it is worth being clear-eyed about what each kind of room actually contains, because you have been comparing yours to that one for years and you have been comparing it on the wrong axis entirely.

You have a room that is full of people, and the coherence of a set has never once been the measure of what a room holds. The Spirit of God is the one who fills a house through the hands of others, and it is written in 1 Peter 4:10 that the grace of God comes in many folds rather than one.

And this, plainly, because it is the thing underneath the whole subject.

That room is not a report on you. Not on your taste, not on your earning, not on the life you have made. A house assembled out of what people gave is not a verdict on the woman living in it, and I am not going to let it be read that way while she is sitting in the chair her sister gave her.

You are a woman whose worth was settled a long way from a set of matching chairs, and what a room is made of has never once been a statement about who lives there. The written word calls the grace of God manifold in 1 Peter 4:10, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the room with you.

Three things, one shelf, on purpose

So here is the assignment, and the words on purpose are carrying it.

Put three handed-down things on one shelf together on purpose tonight, and say out loud who each one came from.

Pick three that came from three different people. They do not go together. That is the point and it is not a problem to be solved.

Put them on one shelf, or one surface, side by side, with a little space between them, arranged deliberately rather than dropped.

You are making a choice in a room that has only ever received, and three objects placed on purpose has never once been too small an act of ownership. The Holy Spirit is the one at work when a person arranges what was given rather than apologizes for it, and 1 Peter 4:10 makes stewardship of what came from elsewhere the ordinary shape of the thing.

Then say the names out loud, one at a time, standing there. That came from Ruth. That came from Aunt May's house. That was from the woman at work whose name I have forgotten.

Say it out loud, even though it feels ridiculous with nobody in the room. Something happens in a person when a thing is said aloud rather than thought, and I do not entirely know why, and it is nonetheless true.

You are naming out loud the people your house came from, and a spoken name has never once been a small thing in a room that has been quietly ashamed. The Spirit of God is the one who is present when a person speaks the truth about her own house, and it is written in 1 Peter 4:10 that what is received gets ministered on to somebody else.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over a woman sitting in a chair that used to be her sister's.

You are living in a house full of things people handed over, and a gift has never once made a home somebody else's. I am not telling you that you would not like to choose something, and I am not going to pretend the wanting is wrong. 1 Peter 4:10 calls the grace of God manifold and describes it moving hand to hand, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is in that room with you.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have a room that is a record of who showed up, and a set that matches has never once contained more than a room full of people who thought of you. The Spirit of God is the one who moves things through hands, and it is written in 1 Peter 4:10 that receiving and handing on is the ordinary shape of grace.

Three things. One shelf. On purpose. Names said out loud.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Room I did not choose, you are mine tonight, and you have never once belonged to the people who handed you over. 1 Peter 4:10 calls the grace of God manifold and moves it hand to hand, so by the Holy Spirit I arrange three of you on purpose, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Apology I attach to my own house, you have no claim on my mouth. The written word makes receiving and handing on the ordinary shape of grace, and by the Spirit of God I say the names of the people my house came from out loud.
  3. Father, You call Your grace manifold, which means it arrives in many shapes and not one. Your word makes a steward of everybody who receives, so by Your Spirit I hold what was put in my hands and I stop calling it lesser.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
