I Keep Doing The Same Easy Thing

There is a surface in that room you have done about eleven times.

You know the one. It is the part where the work is obvious and finishable and produces a visible result in about fifteen minutes. It goes back to how it was inside a week, and then you do it again, and it is genuinely satisfying every single time.

And there is a corner in that same room that has not been touched since you moved in.

Same room. Two areas. One of them has had about three hours of your attention over two years and the other one has had none.

And this is worth looking at honestly, because it is not laziness and it is not avoidance in the ordinary sense.

It is that one of them has a known method and the other one does not.

You know exactly what to do with the surface. You have done it eleven times, and every step of it is familiar, and there is no point in it where you have to stand there and work out what happens next. The corner is the opposite. There is no obvious first move, and standing in front of a thing with no obvious first move, after a working day, is genuinely unpleasant.

So the hand goes to the thing it knows. Every time. For two years.

Tonight the timer goes on in the corner instead.

Ye have sown much, and bring in little

There is a line in Haggai that describes effort producing nothing, and it is unusually direct about it.

Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm. (Haggai 1:6, King James Version)

Sown much and bring in little. That is the whole shape of it. Real effort, going in, and almost nothing coming out the other end.

You are somebody who has genuinely been sowing, and effort that produced little has never once been the same thing as no effort. Haggai 1:6 grants the sowing before it says anything about the harvest, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so to a man who has done the same surface eleven times.

Now look at the whole verse, because the list is doing something.

Eating without enough. Drinking without being filled. Clothing without warmth. Every one of those is a real action producing an insufficient result, and none of them is described as a failure to act.

That is a diagnosis about direction rather than about effort. The people in that chapter were working. What they were not doing was the one thing that would have changed anything.

You have a diagnosis about direction rather than about effort, and repeated work has never once been evidence about a man's willingness. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a direction problem from a character problem, and it is written in Haggai 1:6 that they sowed much and brought in little.

The known method is the trap

Now the practical part, and it is worth being precise about it.

The reason you keep returning to that surface is not that it is easy. It is that it is known.

Known is the actual variable. A known job has no decision points in it, and a decision point at the end of a working day is expensive in a way that physical work is not. Moving heavy things when you know where they go is easy. Standing still in front of a corner working out what should happen there is hard.

That is why the surface wins every week. It costs nothing to decide.

You are avoiding a decision rather than avoiding work, and a known job has never once been chosen because a man was unwilling. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man what he is actually paying for, and Haggai 1:6 grants the sowing while pointing at where it went.

And here is the piece that solves it, and it is the reason the assignment is shaped the way it is.

The corner does not need a method. Two years have gone into waiting for one, and none is required, because for the first twenty minutes there is only one instruction and it is not a decision.

Take things out of it.

That is it. Not sort. Not arrange. Not decide where anything goes. Take four things out of that corner and put them on the floor in the middle of the room. That produces no decisions whatsoever, and it is the only first move that corner has ever needed.

You are able to make a first move that requires no decisions at all, and a corner with no method has never once needed one to begin. The Spirit of God is the one who hands a man a first move he can actually make at seven in the evening, and it is written in Haggai 1:6 that much sowing in the wrong place brings in little.

And this, plainly, in these words. That room is not a report on you. Not on your work, not on your effort, not on your character. A corner nobody has touched in two years is not a verdict on the man who has been doing the surface instead, and I am not going to allow it to be read that way while he is standing in the room deciding.

You are a man whose worth was settled a long way from a corner, and where a man's effort has gone has never once been a statement about who he is. Haggai 1:6 grants the labor and questions only the direction in Haggai 1, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the room with you.

Twenty minutes in the untouched part

So here is the assignment.

Pick the part of the room that has never once been touched, set a timer for twenty minutes, and stop when it goes.

The untouched part. Not the surface. And do not tell yourself you will do the surface after, because there will be no after.

Twenty minutes on a timer where you can hear it.

You are putting twenty minutes into the part that has had none, and one session in an untouched corner has never once been worth less than a twelfth pass at a known one. The Holy Spirit is the one who redirects a man's effort rather than increasing it, and Haggai 1:6 puts the whole problem in where the sowing went.

And the only instruction for those twenty minutes is: take things out.

Four things, six things, whatever comes out in twenty minutes. Onto the floor in the middle of the room. Do not decide where they go. Do not sort them into categories. Do not put anything away.

The corner gets emptier and the middle of the room gets a pile, and that is the correct state at the end of tonight.

Because a corner with things in it has no obvious first move, and a corner with fewer things in it does, and the method you have been waiting for two years appears on its own once there is space to see the corner.

You are creating the space in which a method can appear, and an empty corner has never once been harder to plan than a full one. The Spirit of God is the one present in twenty minutes of unglamorous carrying, and it is written in Haggai 1:6 that much effort in the wrong place brings in little.
