Nothing Matches2 Timothy 1:5

My First Place Came Out Of An Attic

This message is for the young woman whose first home is furnished from family storage, who has never chosen a single thing in it and wants it to feel like her own beginning

Your first place is furnished out of a family attic.

The dresser was your grandmother's and it has a smell that is not yours. The dishes came out of a box in your mother's basement with newspaper still around them. The lamp was in your uncle's garage. The bed frame is the one from the spare room at home.

You did not choose a single thing in that apartment, and you are twenty three, and this was supposed to be the part where you got to choose.

That is the thing nobody names about a first place. Everybody talks about the freedom of it. Nobody mentions that a lot of first apartments are furnished by whatever a family had spare, which means the first room that is finally yours looks like a small museum of everybody else.

And I want to be careful, because there is real gratitude in you about this and it makes the whole thing complicated. People gave you things. People helped you move them. Being ungrateful about a free dresser would be an ugly thing to be, and you know it, so the disappointment does not have anywhere to go and it just sits there.

Let me give it somewhere to go.

You can be genuinely grateful and genuinely disappointed at the same time, and neither one cancels the other, and holding both is not a character fault. It is accuracy.

Then, tonight, we are going to do one thing that makes the room read as a beginning rather than a borrowing.

My First Place Came Out Of An Attic

It dwelt first in thy grandmother

There is a line in a letter from Paul to a young man that is entirely about inherited things.

When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. (2 Timothy 1:5, King James Version)

Look at the sequence. Grandmother, mother, and now him.

Timothy did not originate the thing he is carrying. It came down. It was in a woman two generations back and it moved through a household and it arrived in a young man who was just starting out.

You are carrying things that came down through a family, and something handed on has never once been less yours than something you started from nothing. 2 Timothy 1:5 traces a young man's faith back through two women and calls it his without hesitation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so in a first apartment.

Now look at the word Paul uses, because it is a housing word and I do not think that is an accident.

Dwelt. It dwelt first in thy grandmother. A thing that lives somewhere. That takes up residence and stays. And when it moves it does not become a copy or a loan, it dwells in the new place.

Paul does not say Timothy inherited it or borrowed it or is keeping it warm. He says it is in thee also, present tense, his.

You have things that dwell with you now rather than things you are minding for somebody, and a handed-down object has never once stayed the property of the person who handed it. The Spirit of God is the one who moves what is real from one generation to the next, and it is written in 2 Timothy 1:5 that what dwelt first in a grandmother is in the young man also.

What the attic actually gave you

Let me be practical about what happened when your family loaded that van, because it is worth seeing straight.

They gave you a start that most people your age do not have. That is not a consolation and I am not offering it as one. It is a fact about your position. You began with a full apartment instead of a mattress and a folding chair, and that came from people who wanted you to have somewhere real to live.

You are standing in a room that a family assembled for you, and a full apartment at twenty three has never once been a lesser start than an empty one. The Holy Spirit is the one who moves a household to load a van, and 2 Timothy 1:5 names two women behind one young man without treating him as a copy of either.

And now the other half, which is equally true.

The disappointment is not ingratitude. You wanted the first room to be a statement, and instead it is a summary. That is a real loss and it deserves a name.

Here is the thing about it, though, and it is the only genuinely good news in this article. The reason the room reads as a summary is not that the objects came from a family. It is that not one single thing in it has been chosen yet.

That is a different problem, and it is fixable, and it starts tonight with about six minutes.

You are able to make one choice in a room that has only received, and one deliberate decision has never once needed a whole roomful behind it to count. The Spirit of God is the one at work in a small act on an ordinary evening, and it is written in 2 Timothy 1:5 that what came down through a family became genuinely present in a young person.

And this, plainly, because it needs saying in these words.

That apartment is not a report on you. Not on how far you have got, not on what your work pays, not on what you deserve to be living in at twenty three. A first place furnished out of an attic is not a verdict on the woman living in it, and I am not going to let it be read that way while she is standing in her own kitchen.

You are a woman whose worth was settled a long way from a dresser, and a room made of what a family had spare has never once been a statement about who is in it. 2 Timothy 1:5 traces a real thing through three people without ranking any of them, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the apartment with you.

Three things, and a gap

So here is the assignment, and the second half of it is the part that matters.

Put three things that came down from the attic on one shelf together on purpose tonight, and leave a gap for something that will be yours.

Take three. The small one from your grandmother. The thing from your mother's basement. Whatever came out of the garage. They do not match. That is fine and it is not the point.

Put them on one shelf, arranged, with space between them, so that it reads as deliberate rather than unpacked.

You are arranging a family's things by your own hand, and three objects placed on purpose has never once been too small an act of ownership. The Holy Spirit is the one at work when a young woman decides something in her own first apartment, and 2 Timothy 1:5 shows what came down through two women dwelling in a young person as their own.

Then leave a gap. At one end, deliberately, enough space for one more object.

Do not fill it. Do not go looking for something to put in it. The gap is the whole point, and it is doing two jobs at once.

It says the shelf is not finished, and it says that the person who finishes it is you, and it makes both of those true tonight rather than at some point in the future.

You are holding an empty space that belongs to you, and a gap on a shelf has never once been an emptiness in a room. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a beginning that has not filled up yet, and it is written in 2 Timothy 1:5 that a thing which dwelt first in a grandmother is in a young person also.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over a young woman standing in a first apartment that came down from an attic.

You are living in your own beginning, and a room that came out of a family attic has never once been a borrowed life. I am not telling you to stop wanting to choose things and I am not going to call the disappointment ingratitude. 2 Timothy 1:5 has a young man carrying what came down through two women and calls it his, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is in that apartment now.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have a shelf with a gap on the end of it, and a start assembled by other people has never once been the same thing as a life assembled by them. The Spirit of God is the one who makes what came down genuinely present, and it is written in 2 Timothy 1:5 that it dwelt first in a grandmother and is in her also.

Three things, arranged. And a gap at the end.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Furniture that came down from an attic, you are mine now, and you have never once stayed the property of the people who carried you down. 2 Timothy 1:5 puts what dwelt first in a grandmother into a young person as her own, so by the Holy Spirit I arrange three of you on purpose, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Feeling that gratitude cancels disappointment, you have no claim on this apartment. The written word traces a real thing through three people without ranking one above another, and by the Spirit of God I hold both of them at once and keep going.
  3. Father, You let what dwelt first in a grandmother dwell in a young person as genuinely their own. Your word says it plainly and calls it hers, so by Your Spirit I leave a gap on the shelf tonight and call this place my beginning.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
