That Is Where The Argument Happened

There is a room in your house that has a date on it.

Not a written one. You know the one I mean, and you know the evening. The room is fine. The room has been fine for three years. The chairs are the same chairs and the light is the same light and nothing about it is broken.

But you cross it faster than you cross the others, and you have never once sat down in it since, and when you do go in there for something you are already leaving before you have arrived.

A room can hold an evening for a very long time. Longer than the people in it hold it, sometimes. You may have made peace with the person. You may have made peace with yourself. And the room did not get told.

I want to say clearly at the start that this is not a small thing and I am not going to treat it as one. What happened in there was real. Something got said or something got heard, and rooms are where our bodies were when things happened, and bodies remember locations.

So there is nothing foolish about it. It is your nervous system doing exactly what it was built to do.

But three years is a long time for a room in your own house to belong to somebody else's worst twenty minutes.

We are going to take it back tonight, and we are going to do it in the smallest possible way.

Surely the Lord is in this place

There is a moment in Genesis where a man wakes up in a place he did not choose, having got there running away from something he had done.

And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not. (Genesis 28:16, King James Version)

Read that slowly, because there is a great deal in it.

He is not in a sanctuary. He is in the open, with a stone under his head, in the middle of the worst stretch of his life, and he has arrived there because of a mess he made himself.

You are not the first person to wake up somewhere hard and find God already there, and a bad place has never once been a place He was absent from. The Holy Spirit is the one who was with a running man under a stone, and Genesis 28:16 is that man saying out loud what had been true all night.

And what he says on waking is not that the place is holy now. He says the Lord was here, and I did not know.

Which means the presence of God in that place was not created by the moment he noticed it. It was already there while he slept. It was there while he lay down miserable. It had been there the whole time he assumed he was alone with what he had done.

You are in a place where God already was, and a room where something went wrong has never once been a room He left. Genesis 28:16 has a man discover a presence that was there before he woke, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman the same thing about a back room in her own house.

Now hold that beside your room.

That space has been treated as though the evening is what is in it. As though the air still holds the thing that was said. And what Jacob found out is that a place can be full of God while the person in it is entirely unaware, right through the worst of something.

The Lord was in that room three years ago. He was in it while it was being said. He has not been anywhere else since.

You have never once been alone in that room, and an evening that happened in it has never once had the last word about what the room contains. The Spirit of God is the one who was present in it then and is present in it now, and it is written in Genesis 28:16 that He was in the place before the man knew.

What avoidance is protecting

Let me be honest about what the avoiding is doing for you, because it is doing something.

It is keeping the thing at a manageable distance. Every time that room gets crossed quickly, the whole of it does not land, and there is a reason your body built that. Feeling the whole of it every day would be more than a person could carry while also doing everything else in a week.

You are being kept by God inside a habit your own body made to protect you, and an avoided room has never once been a sign of weakness in the woman avoiding it. Genesis 28:16 has a man asleep in the open on the worst night of his life with the Lord in the place, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is kind about how a person got here.

So the avoidance was mercy. It was your own body being kind to you at a time when kindness was in short supply.

But there is a cost, and it has been quietly adding up.

The cost is that the room now has authority. Every day that you go around it, the evening gets a little more established as the true content of that space, and your house gets a little smaller.

You are living in a house that is bigger than the route you take through it, and one evening has never once been given the deed to a room. The Holy Spirit is the one who walks a woman back into a place she has been going around, and Genesis 28:16 names a hard night in a hard place as somewhere the Lord already was.

And I want to say this plainly, because somebody needs to hear it in these words.

The state of that room is not a report on you. What was said in there is not a description of who you are. A room that a woman avoids is not evidence about her character, her marriage, her mothering or her worth, and I am not going to allow it to be read that way while we are in here.

You are a woman whose worth was settled somewhere other than that evening, and a room in a house has never once been a verdict on the person living in it. The written word puts the Lord in the place before the man ever noticed in Genesis 28:16, and the same Spirit who was there is the one saying so now.

There is one more thing, and it is about how this actually changes.

It will not change by talking about it. Talking has its place and this is not it. It changes by your body being in that room, doing something ordinary, for a length of time, repeatedly, until the room accumulates some other evenings.

That is not a technique. That is just how rooms work.

You are able to give a room new evenings, and three years of one evening has never once been more than the beginning of what a room can hold. The Spirit of God is the one present in an ordinary quiet ten minutes, and Genesis 28:16 records a place that turned out to be full of God on the worst night of a man's life.

Ten minutes and the light

So here is the assignment, and it is deliberately tiny.

Sit in that room for ten minutes tonight, and change one small thing about the light before you leave.

Sit down. In a chair in that room, properly, for ten minutes on a clock.

Take something with you. A cup, a phone face down, anything. Do not go in there to think about it. That is not the assignment and you have done enough of that in doorways.

You are in that room for ten minutes and nothing more is being asked of you, and sitting somewhere has never once required a person to have resolved it first. The Holy Spirit is the one in the chair beside a woman who is doing this for the first time, and it is written in Genesis 28:16 that the Lord was in the place before anybody knew it.

The feeling will arrive in the first two minutes. Let it be there. You are not trying to fix it tonight and I am not going to pretend ten minutes settles a thing that took three years.

Then, before you get up, change the light. That is all. Put on a lamp that is usually off. Turn the main light off and leave the small one on. Open the curtain that is always shut and leave it open.

Light is the fastest way to make a room feel like a different room, and it is the one change you can make in eleven seconds with nothing in your hands.

You are changing the room a person walks into tomorrow, and one lamp has never once been too small a thing to make a space feel unfamiliar in a good way. The Spirit of God is the one who works through eleven seconds and a lamp switch, and Genesis 28:16 turns on a man discovering what a place already contained.
