The Room I AvoidEcclesiastes 5:18

The Good Room Is For An Occasion

This message is for the woman keeping one room ready for an occasion that has not come in four years, who wants to use the best room in her house on an ordinary Tuesday

There is a room at the front of your house that is ready.

The cushions are the way they should be. Nothing is on the floor. The good chairs are in there, and the thing your grandmother gave you, and it looks, from the doorway, like a room in a house where somebody is about to arrive.

Nobody is about to arrive.

That room has been ready since about four years ago, and in that time it has held roughly two evenings of actual human beings. The rest of the time it has been kept.

And I want to be careful here, because keeping a room ready is not a foolish thing to do. It comes from somewhere good. Somewhere in the story there was a woman who taught you that a house ought to have one place in it fit for a guest, and she was right, and you took it seriously, and you have kept a room fit for a guest for four years.

The problem is not the standard. The problem is the door.

Because a room that is only ever ready is a room that is only ever empty, and an empty room does not stay ready. It goes strange. You will have felt it. There is a particular chill in a room nobody sits in, and it has nothing to do with the heating.

So here is what we are going to do this evening, and it is smaller than you think and stranger than you expect.

We are going to hold the occasion tonight.

The Good Room Is For An Occasion

Eat thy bread, and this is thy portion

There is a line in Ecclesiastes that sounds like a small thing and is not.

Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion. (Ecclesiastes 5:18, King James Version)

The word to stop on is portion.

A portion is not a bonus. It is not a reward that arrives after the work is finished. A portion is the share that belongs to a person, handed over, already theirs, and the verse says that enjoying the good of your own labor is exactly that.

Which means the good room is not a prize you have not yet won. It is part of the share.

You are holding a portion that was handed to you rather than a prize awaiting an occasion, and enjoying what you have worked for has never once had to be earned twice. Ecclesiastes 5:18 calls it a portion and says God gives it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman standing in a doorway that the room behind her is hers.

Now look at the timing in that verse, because it is precise and almost nobody notices it.

All the days of his life. Not the good days. Not the days when somebody is visiting. All of them, including a wet Tuesday in the middle of a month with nothing in it.

The verse has no waiting room in it at all. There is work, and there is a portion, and the portion is enjoyed across the ordinary run of days rather than saved up for the ones that qualify.

You have a portion that covers Tuesday, and an ordinary week has never once been the wrong size of day for the good of your own labor. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an unremarkable evening feel like enough, and Ecclesiastes 5:18 spreads the portion across all the days rather than the notable ones.

The occasion you are waiting for

Let me ask about the occasion, because I think it is worth naming.

What is it? Genuinely. When you picture the evening that room is being kept for, who is in it?

For most people it is a small, warm, entirely reasonable picture. Some friends. A meal. Somebody saying the room looks lovely. Nothing extravagant, nothing showy, just a proper evening in a proper room with people in it.

Now notice something about that picture. Every single person in it is a guest.

There is nobody in that imagined evening who actually lives in your house. The occasion the room is being kept for is an occasion where you are the host and other people are the point, which means the room has been reserved for everybody except the people who pay for it.

You are the household this house belongs to, and a room set aside for guests has never once meant a room withheld from you. It is written in Ecclesiastes 5:18 that the good of a person's own labor is that person's portion, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so in a hallway on a Tuesday.

And here is what I want to say about the good chairs.

Nothing in that room is being preserved by not being used. That is not how a chair works. A chair that nobody sits in does not stay new. It gets stiff and cold and slightly wrong, in the way that a room nobody enters gets a smell, and the preserving was never actually preserving anything.

The only thing being kept is the shape of an evening that has not happened.

You have a room in working order, and four years of readiness has never once been the same thing as four years of care. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a household into the rooms it has, and Ecclesiastes 5:18 puts eating and drinking and enjoying in the present tense of an ordinary life.

There is one more thing, and this one is for the woman who taught you the standard.

She did not teach you to keep a room empty. She taught you that a house ought to have a place in it worthy of somebody sitting down. You are worthy of somebody sitting down. That is not a stretch of her rule. That is her rule, applied to the person she was actually thinking about when she made it.

You are somebody worth putting the good chair out for, and the state of a room has never once been a report on the woman who keeps it. The written word hands the good of a life to the one who lived it in Ecclesiastes 5:18, and the same Spirit who says it is a portion says whose portion it is.

Hold the occasion tonight

So here is the assignment.

Sit in the good room for ten minutes this evening with a cup of something, and move one thing before you leave the room.

Take the cup with you. This matters more than it sounds, because a cup makes it an occasion, and an occasion is what the room has been waiting for, and there is nothing in the rule that says the occasion has to include other people.

Sit in the good chair. The actual one. Not the edge of the other one.

Do it in whatever you are wearing. Do not change first, do not make anything, do not put music on unless you want to. The whole point is that this evening counts as it is.

You are holding an occasion right now by being in the room with a cup, and the good of your own house has never once required an audience to be real. Ecclesiastes 5:18 says a person's portion is eaten and drunk and enjoyed, and the Holy Spirit is the one sitting in the good chair opposite a woman doing it for the first time in four years.

You will feel like you are doing something slightly wrong. That is the four years talking, and it will pass in about six minutes.

Then, before you get up, move one thing. Turn the lamp on and leave it on. Put the cushion where a person's back actually goes rather than where it looks right. Take the cup back out with you and let the room show it was used.

Small. One thing. Enough to leave evidence that a person was in there.

You are leaving a mark on a room that has been holding its breath, and one moved cushion has never once been too small a use of a house. The Spirit of God is the one who takes a held breath out of a room, and it is written in Ecclesiastes 5:18 that the portion is for all the days of a life and not the notable ones.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over a woman with a room at the front of her house that has been ready for four years.

You are allowed in the best room in your own house, and an ordinary Tuesday has never once been too small an occasion for it. I am not telling you to stop keeping a good room, and I am not going to tell you the standard was wrong. Ecclesiastes 5:18 calls the good of your own labor your portion, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is holding the door open.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have an occasion tonight, and a room does not know the difference between a dinner party and a woman with a cup of tea in the good chair. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an unremarkable evening count, and it is written in Ecclesiastes 5:18 that the portion runs across all the days of a life.

Ten minutes. The good chair. A cup.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Good room kept ready for four years, you are open tonight, and you have never once been reserved against the woman who keeps you. Ecclesiastes 5:18 calls the good of my own labor my portion, so by the Holy Spirit I sit down in you with a cup, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Rule that an occasion needs other people, you have no claim to keep this door shut. The written word spreads the portion across all the days of a life rather than the notable ones, and by the Spirit of God I make this Tuesday the occasion.
  3. Father, You called the good of a person's own work their portion and You said You give it. Your word puts it in all the days rather than the special ones, so by Your Spirit I take my portion this evening in the good chair.
