The Table Is Under All Of That

You know exactly which table I mean.

It is in the room you walk past to get to the kitchen. There is a lamp at one end and a stack at the other, and somewhere in the middle, under a coat that has been on it since March and a box that was going back to somebody, there is a surface that a family is supposed to sit around.

Nobody decided this. That is the part worth saying out loud at the start. There was no evening when your household voted to stop eating in there. What happened is that somebody came in with their hands full and put something down, because it was the nearest flat thing, and the next person did the same, and a table is very good at being a shelf and very patient about it.

So now you eat where the plates are easiest. On the couch, at the counter, in front of something. And the room with the table in it has become a room you cross.

And here is what I am not going to say to you. I am not going to tell you to clear that table. You have known for a year that the table could be cleared. Knowing has never once been the thing that was missing, and a man does not need another person telling him what is obvious about his own house.

We are going to do something in a different order.

We are going to sit down at it first.

He cast the household stuff back out

There is a small, hot moment in the book of Nehemiah that I have never once heard anybody preach, and it is about a room.

The priest had given a man named Tobiah a chamber inside the temple courts. A room set apart for one purpose had quietly been handed over to another one. Nehemiah came back from a trip and found out.

And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber. (Nehemiah 13:8, King James Version)

Household stuff. That is the phrase. Not treasure, not weapons, not anything dramatic. Ordinary belongings, sitting in a room that was for something else, and nobody in the building had thought about it in months.

You are living in a house where one room drifted, and a drift that nobody chose has never once been a verdict on the man who lives there. Nehemiah 13:8 describes a chamber that changed hands without a decision being made about it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man the difference between a drift and a failure.

Now look at what Nehemiah actually does, because the order of his two verbs is the whole point.

He goes in. Then he moves things.

He does not stand in the doorway for a year composing a plan for the chamber. He is in the room before a single object is lifted, and being in the room is what makes the lifting possible.

You are able to walk into a room that has quietly been repurposed and stand in it as the person it belongs to, and a surface under a coat has never once transferred ownership of anything. Nehemiah 13:8 has a man in the chamber before he touches one item in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who walks in beside a father who has been going around his own dining room for a year.

There is one more thing in that verse, and it is the emotion.

It grieved him sore. He is not annoyed. He is not embarrassed. He is grieved, which is what a person feels about something loved that has been misused, and that feeling is a good sign rather than a bad one.

If something turns over in you when you walk past that table, the something is not shame. It is the correct response of a man who knows what a table is for.

You have the right grief about the right thing, and a feeling about a room has never once been proof that a man has failed in it. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a man love a room he has stopped using, and it is written in Nehemiah 13:8 that the man who cleared the chamber was grieved before he was busy.

What a table is actually for

Let me tell you what I think that table has been doing for a year, because it is not nothing.

It has been taking the weight. Every coat, every bag, every box that had nowhere else to go landed on it, and it held all of it without complaint, and your household kept functioning because there was one flat place that was always available.

That is not a failure. That is a table doing something useful.

But a table is not first of all a place where things rest. It is a place where people face each other. It is the one piece of furniture in a house built so that everybody in the room can see everybody else at the same time, which is a strange and specific thing to make.

You are the owner of the one circle in this house, and a stack of mail has never once outranked the reason a table was built. The Spirit of God is the one who reminds a household what it is short of, and Nehemiah 13:8 holds a room to the purpose it was set apart for even after somebody else has filled it.

Look around your house at what everything else is aimed at. The chairs point at a screen. The counter faces a wall. The couch is a row.

The table is a circle with people on all sides of it, and that is why it goes quiet first when a household gets busy, and it is why the household notices.

You have a piece of furniture in your house that was made for faces, and a year of coats has never once changed what it was made to do. The written word puts a man back into a room with a purpose in Nehemiah 13:8, and the same Spirit who moved him is the one at work in a house where the meals happen standing up.

And here is the part I want a father to hear, because that is what you are.

Your children will not remember the state of that table. They will remember whether the adults in their house sat down across from them and stayed there for twenty minutes.

That is a low bar and a high one at the same time. It costs nothing. It waits on no room being finished.

You are able to give your household the thing it is actually short of without changing one item in that room, and a cleared surface has never once been the condition on a family sitting down. The Holy Spirit is the one who brings a house back around a table, and Nehemiah 13:8 shows the room being occupied by its rightful owner before it is ever emptied.

Ten minutes at a table under a coat

So here is the assignment, and I want to be very precise about it, because the order is doing all the work.

Sit down at that table for ten minutes tonight, and move one thing off it before you get up.

Sit first. Pull a chair out, at the end that is nearest clear, and sit down in it properly. Not perched. Not standing over it. Sitting, the way a person sits at a table.

Take something with you if you want. A cup. Your phone, face down. It does not matter.

You are welcome in the room you pay for, and a chair at your own table has never once needed permission from the state of the surface. The Holy Spirit is the one who settles a man into a seat, and Nehemiah 13:8 records a chamber recovered by a man who was standing inside it first.

The urge to stand up will arrive almost at once, and it will arrive because a year of training says this room is entered carrying something and left carrying something. Stay in the chair anyway.

You are able to be at that table with nothing in your hands, and ten minutes in a chair has never once required a room to have earned it first. The Spirit of God is the one keeping a man in a seat he has been avoiding, and Nehemiah 13:8 seats the whole recovery of a room in a man being in it.

Then, before you get up, move one thing.

One. The coat goes on a hook. The box goes in the car so it actually gets returned. The stack of mail goes anywhere else at all.

Not the table. One thing off the table.

And then get up and go to bed, and do not stand in the doorway afterward assessing the improvement, because there will not be one, and looking for one is how a man talks himself out of doing it again.

You are doing a small thing in the right order rather than a large thing in the wrong one, and one object lifted from a table has never once been too small a beginning to count. It is written in Nehemiah 13:8 that a chamber came back one armful at a time, and the Holy Spirit is the one who counts the first armful as the recovery of the room.
