It Is RentedPhilippians 4:11

The Furniture Came With The Place

This message is for the woman living among a landlord's furniture she did not pick and cannot remove, who wants her own life visible in a room chosen by a stranger

Count the things in that room you chose.

The couch is not yours. The table is not yours. The chairs are not yours. There is a picture on the wall that came with the place, and it is not one you would have picked, and you cannot take it down because of the mark it will leave and because it is on the inventory.

The count comes out at about four. Your things fit in one bag and everything else is somebody else's decision.

And a furnished rental is a very particular kind of living, and nobody writes about it, because everybody assumes renting means empty rooms you fill. This is the other one. This is living inside a completed set of decisions made by a person you have never met, about what a life in these rooms should look like.

I want to name the specific feeling, because naming it does most of the work.

It is not that the furniture is bad. Some of it is fine. It is that the room is finished, and you had nothing to do with the finishing, and there is no obvious place to put yourself into it.

A half empty room invites something. A fully furnished one somebody else chose does not.

So the question tonight is not how to like the couch. It is how a person becomes visible in a room that was completed before she arrived.

The Furniture Came With The Place

In whatsoever state I am

There is a line from Paul about contentment that gets used as a lid on people, and read properly it is the opposite of that.

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. (Philippians 4:11, King James Version)

I have learned. That is the phrase everybody skips, and it changes the whole sentence.

Contentment in that verse is not a temperament and it is not a command. It is something Paul says he acquired over time, in specific circumstances, which means he did not have it at the start and there was a process.

You are allowed to be somewhere in a process rather than at the end of one, and contentment has never once been a thing a person was supposed to arrive with. Philippians 4:11 has Paul call it something learned, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so to a woman in a room she did not furnish.

Now look at what contentment is not, in that verse, because the misreading has done real damage.

It is not indifference. Paul is not saying nothing matters and it makes no difference where anybody is. He is a man with strong preferences who wrote whole letters about wanting to be somewhere else.

Contentment in that sentence is the ability to be genuinely all right in a place while still having a view about it. Both things at once. That is the skill he says he learned.

You are able to hold a view about a room and be all right in it at the same time, and being content has never once required anybody to pretend they chose the couch. The Spirit of God is the one who teaches a person how to be in a place without lying about it, and it is written in Philippians 4:11 that this was learned rather than issued.

Becoming visible in a finished room

Now the practical question, which is the actual subject.

In an empty room, a person becomes visible by filling it. That route is closed to you. The room is full, and everything in it belongs to somebody else, and adding more furniture is not possible and would not help.

But visibility does not actually work by volume. It works by contrast.

Three things that are unmistakably yours, together, on one surface, in a room where nothing else is, will read louder than a whole roomful of your own furniture would. Because they are the only three, and the eye finds the exception immediately.

You are able to become visible by contrast rather than by quantity, and three things on one surface have never once been outnumbered by a room they did not choose. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person the route that is actually open, and Philippians 4:11 has a man learn to be all right somewhere without pretending about it.

And here is the practical detail that matters, and I want to be precise.

They have to be together. Three of your things spread around that room disappear, because each one is surrounded by six of somebody else's and reads as part of the set.

Three of them on one surface, side by side, with space between them, is a statement. Same objects, entirely different effect, and the difference is that somebody put them there on purpose.

You are making one deliberate arrangement in a room full of somebody else's decisions, and three objects together have never once been able to be mistaken for part of an inventory. The Spirit of God is the one at work when a woman makes one decision in a place she did not decide, and it is written in Philippians 4:11 that contentment was learned in real circumstances.

And this, plainly, in these words. That room is not a report on you. Not on your taste, not on your earning, not on the life you are making in it. A room furnished by a landlord is not a verdict on the woman renting it, and I am not going to allow it to be read that way while she is sitting on a couch she did not pick.

You are a woman whose worth was settled a long way from a furnished rental, and somebody else's furniture has never once been a statement about who lives among it. Philippians 4:11 makes contentment a learned thing in real conditions in Philippians 4, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the room with you.

Three things, one surface

So here is the assignment.

Put three things that are yours on one surface in that room tonight, and let them be the only three things in the room you chose.

Three that came with you. From the bag. From before. Things that have nothing to do with anybody who has ever held keys to that place.

They do not have to go together and they should not be functional. Not the phone charger. Not the useful thing. Three that are yours because you kept them.

You are putting the only three chosen things in the room together where they can be seen, and three objects on one surface have never once been too small a claim on a place. The Holy Spirit is the one at work when a woman arranges her own things in somebody else's room, and Philippians 4:11 has a man learn to be all right in real conditions rather than imagined ones.

One surface. Together. Spaced. Arranged on purpose so that the arrangement is visible as an arrangement.

The side table, the windowsill, one end of a shelf. Pick the surface your eye goes to when you sit down in that room, because that is the one that will do the work.

And then leave everything else alone. Do not move the landlord's things to make room. Do not rearrange around them. The whole point is three things, chosen, together, in a room that is otherwise entirely somebody else's, and the contrast is doing all the work.

You are letting a contrast speak rather than trying to win a room, and three chosen things have never once needed the rest of a room to agree with them. The Spirit of God is the one present when a person makes one true mark on a place, and it is written in Philippians 4:11 that contentment is learned in the actual state a person is in.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over a woman sitting on a couch that came with the place.

You are visible in this room whether the furniture is yours or not, and somebody else's choices have never once been able to keep a life out of a place. I am not telling you to like the couch and I am not asking you to feel differently about the picture on the wall. Philippians 4:11 makes contentment a thing that gets learned in real circumstances, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is in that room now.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have three things and one surface, and a fully furnished room has never once been able to hide the only three objects in it that somebody chose. The Spirit of God is the one who teaches a person to be all right somewhere without pretending, and it is written in Philippians 4:11 that Paul learned it in the state he was actually in.

Three things. Together. On one surface.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Room that was finished before I arrived, you are not the whole of what is visible in here, and you have never once been able to keep me out of my own place. Philippians 4:11 has contentment learned in real conditions, so by the Holy Spirit I put three of my own things on one surface, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Feeling that there is nowhere to put myself in here, you have no claim on this room. The written word makes being all right somewhere a thing that gets learned rather than issued, and by the Spirit of God I arrange the only three things in here that I chose.
  3. Father, Your word says Paul learned to be content in whatsoever state he was in, and learned is the word it uses. By Your Spirit I stop waiting to like this room, and I put three things of my own where I will see them.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
