There Is Nothing Left By Seven O'Clock

By seven o'clock there is nothing left.

That is not a mood and it is not a metaphor. It is a physical fact about a man who has been standing up, or driving, or dealing with people, or carrying things, since half past six in the morning. The body arrives home about forty minutes after the man does, and by seven the whole apparatus has closed for the night.

And on top of that, most evenings, there is a second thing.

The second thing is a quiet verdict. It says that a man who has nothing left at seven is failing somewhere. That other men come home and do things. That the tiredness is a character issue rather than an arithmetic one.

I want to deal with that second thing first, because it is doing more damage than the tiredness, and because it is not true.

You are not tired because something is wrong with you. You are tired because the work took it. That is what work does. The energy went somewhere real and it produced something real and there is a reason it is gone.

So this article is not going to try to give you energy you do not have. That would be a lie and you would spot it in a paragraph.

It is going to size a thing to the strength you actually have at seven o'clock, which is more than nothing and considerably less than an evening.

He giveth power to the faint

There is a line in Isaiah about tiredness, and the thing to notice is who it is addressed to.

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. (Isaiah 40:29, King James Version)

The faint. Them that have no might. Those are the two categories in that verse, and both of them are people with nothing left.

You are the exact person that verse is addressed to, and having nothing left at seven has never once put a man outside what God said He does. Isaiah 40:29 speaks specifically to the faint and to those with no might, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so to a man in a chair at seven o'clock.

Now notice what it does not say, because the absence is important.

It does not say He gives power to those who have managed their time better. It does not say strength comes to the ones who kept a bit in reserve. It says the faint, and it says no might, and those are the qualifying conditions rather than the disqualifying ones.

Being empty is the address on the envelope. It is not the reason the letter does not arrive.

You have a condition that Scripture names as the one He responds to, and being empty has never once been a disqualification from anything. The Spirit of God is the one who gives power to the faint by name, and it is written in Isaiah 40:29 that He increases strength in those who have none.

Sized to seven o'clock

Now the practical part, and this is the whole of the second half.

Almost every instruction ever written about a room assumes a person with energy. Stand up, move furniture, work through it, get it done. All of that is written for a man at ten in the morning on a day off.

Nobody writes anything for seven o'clock.

You are able to have an action written for the hour you actually arrive in, and seven o'clock has never once been outside what God works with. The Holy Spirit is the one who meets a man at the hour he gets home rather than at the hour advice assumes, and Isaiah 40:29 addresses itself to the faint.

So here is what a seven o'clock action has to be, and I want to name the conditions rather than just hand you a job.

It has to be done sitting down. It has to require no lifting. It has to be inside arm's reach. And it has to have a hard end, on a clock, so that no decision about when to stop is required from a man who has no decisions left.

You are able to work inside a set of conditions your body can actually meet tonight, and an action sized for a tired man has never once been a lesser action than one sized for a rested one. The Holy Spirit is the one who meets a man where his strength actually is, and Isaiah 40:29 addresses itself to the faint rather than to the fresh.

And here is what genuinely surprises people about this.

An enormous amount can be done from a chair in a corner. Sorting the contents of a box that has been in that corner for a year. Turning things so they face the room. Moving everything within reach into a different arrangement. Taking four things out of a corner and putting them on the floor beside you to go elsewhere tomorrow.

None of that requires standing up, and all of it changes a corner.

You are holding a real action rather than a token one, and twenty minutes from a chair has never once been the same thing as doing nothing. The Spirit of God is the one who works through what a man can reach, and it is written in Isaiah 40:29 that He gives power to the faint.

And this, plainly, in these words. That room is not a report on you. Not on your effort, not on your character, not on how hard you are working. A room a man has no strength left for at seven is not a verdict on the man, and I am not going to allow it to be read that way while he is sitting in a chair at the end of a shift.

You are a man whose worth was settled a long way from a corner of a room, and what a tired man has not got to has never once been a statement about who he is. Isaiah 40:29 addresses the faint directly in Isaiah 40, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the room with you.

Sitting down, twenty minutes, arm's reach

So here is the assignment, and every part of it is sized on purpose.

Pick one corner at seven o'clock, set a timer for twenty minutes, sit down in it and move only what you can reach.

Pick the corner in about four seconds. Do not choose well. Choose fast.

Bring a chair to it, or sit on the floor if that is easier, and set twenty minutes on a timer where you can hear it.

You are sitting down to work rather than standing up to it, and a chair has never once been a smaller way to change a corner than a pair of legs. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man who sits down at seven, and Isaiah 40:29 gives power to the faint by name.

Then move only what you can reach. That is the rule and it is doing the work.

If you have to stand up to get it, it is not tonight's. If it is heavy, it is not tonight's. Everything within arm's reach of that chair is in, and everything else is out, and there is no judgment required about any of it.

Sort the box. Turn the things. Rearrange what is on the shelf at that height. Put four things on the floor beside you for tomorrow.

Then the timer goes and you stop. Do not stand up and assess. Do not carry the four things anywhere. Stop, get up, and go to bed.

You are stopping on a clock rather than at the end of your strength, and twenty minutes that ends cleanly has never once been the reason a man did not come back tomorrow. The Spirit of God is the one present in twenty minutes of quiet work at the end of a long day, and it is written in Isaiah 40:29 that He increases strength in those who have no might.
