Take a proper look at your apartment and work out what percentage of it you put there.
The couch was Danny's and Danny moved to another city. The coffee table came with the second guy, whose name you have to think about now. The rug was already there when you arrived and nobody knows whose it was. The kitchen has four mugs and none of them are yours.
You brought a bed, some clothes, a box of your own things, and that is roughly it.
So you live in a place that is about eighty percent sediment. Layers of people who passed through, each of whom left the things that were too much trouble to move, and you are living inside the residue of four other people's decisions about what was worth carrying downstairs.
And you know what that does. It makes the place feel provisional. Like a waiting area with a lease. Like somewhere you are staying rather than somewhere you live, even though you have been here two years and it is where you sleep every night.
I am not going to tell you to make it homely, because that word means nothing and every man reading this has already ignored that advice from somebody else.
I am going to point at one specific thing, and then we are going to do one specific thing tonight, and it will take four minutes.
The specific thing is this: nothing in that apartment has ever been placed. Everything in it has been left.

He hath made every thing beautiful in his time
There is a line in Ecclesiastes that is usually read as being about timing and is also about assembly.
He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end. (Ecclesiastes 3:11, King James Version)
Every thing. Not a matching set. Every separate thing, each in its own time, each made beautiful on its own terms.
You are surrounded by things Scripture says were each made beautiful in their own time, and a room of unrelated objects has never once been a room without anything good in it. Ecclesiastes 3:11 puts the beauty in each thing rather than in the agreement between them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so in an apartment furnished by four people who left.
And notice what the second half of the verse does, because it is unexpectedly relevant.
No man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end. Nobody gets to see the whole design. Everybody is standing somewhere in the middle of something they cannot see the shape of.
Which is exactly what your apartment is. A stage in something. Not a final state, not a failure, a stage. And the verse says plainly that no man sees the beginning to the end of what is being made.
You have a place that is a stage in something rather than a verdict on anything, and a provisional room has never once been proof of a provisional life. The Spirit of God is the one at work in the middle stretch that nobody can see the shape of, and it is written in Ecclesiastes 3:11 that the whole work is not visible from where anybody stands.
Left is not the same as placed
Now the specific thing, and I want to make it concrete because it sounds abstract until you look at your own floor.
Every object in that apartment got where it is by gravity. Somebody put it down, or somebody did not take it, and it stayed. The couch is against that wall because that is where two guys shoved it in 2021. The table is at that angle because somebody moved it to get past and never moved it back.
Nothing has been placed. There is a difference between an object being somewhere and an object being put somewhere, and a person can feel the difference in a room without ever being able to name it.
You are able to place something rather than leave it, and one deliberate act has never once been beneath the size of a change worth making. The Holy Spirit is the one who works through a man deciding something small on purpose, and Ecclesiastes 3:11 says each thing is made beautiful in its own time rather than in a set.
And here is why this matters more in a rented shared place than anywhere else.
You cannot change the walls. You cannot change the floor. Nobody living here picked the couch and it is not going to be moved out. Almost every lever a person would normally reach for is unavailable.
Placement is the one that is not. Placement is free, reversible, requires nobody's permission, and is the only thing in that apartment that is entirely inside your control.
You are holding the one lever nobody can take off you, and a rented room has never once removed a man's ability to decide where a thing sits. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in what a man can actually do rather than in what he cannot, and it is written in Ecclesiastes 3:11 that the beauty is in each thing in its own time.
And this, plainly. The state of that apartment is not a report on you. It is a record of four people's moving days. A man who lives in what other people left behind is not being described by it, and I am not going to let it be read that way while he is standing in his own kitchen.
You are a man whose worth was settled a long way from a rented couch, and an apartment made of leftovers has never once been a verdict on the person in it. Ecclesiastes 3:11 puts what is being made beyond anybody's ability to see it whole, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the room with you.
Three things, four minutes
So here is the assignment, and it is genuinely four minutes long.
Put three left-behind things on one surface together on purpose tonight, and move one of them an inch until it looks deliberate.
Three objects that came from three different people who are no longer here. The mug that was Danny's. The thing on the windowsill nobody claims. Whatever is on the shelf.
Put them together on one surface. A windowsill, the top of the bookcase, one end of the counter.
You are placing something in a room that has only ever accumulated, and three objects put together on purpose has never once been too small an act to change how a place feels. The Holy Spirit is the one at work when a man decides something in his own apartment, and Ecclesiastes 3:11 makes each thing beautiful in its own time rather than in company with a matching one.
Then the inch. This is the part that does the work and it will feel stupid.
Look at the three, and move one of them slightly. Left, right, forward, whatever. Look again. Move it again if it needs it. Keep going until it reads as arranged rather than dumped.
You will know the moment it happens. Everybody does. There is no skill involved and nobody has to teach it.
You are doing the one thing in that apartment that requires nobody's permission, and an inch of deliberate movement has never once been a small thing in a place that has only been left. The Spirit of God is the one present in four minutes on a windowsill, and it is written in Ecclesiastes 3:11 that the whole work is not visible from where a man is standing in the middle of it.
So here is what I believe is going out tonight over a man living in what four people did not take with them.
You are the one living here now, and a place furnished by people who left has never once belonged to them instead of you. I am not telling you to like the couch and I am not telling you the place is fine. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says every thing is made beautiful in its own time and that nobody sees the whole work, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is in that apartment now.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have one lever that no lease and no landlord has ever been able to take, and a room that was only ever left has never once been beyond a man who places something. The Spirit of God is the one at work in what a man can actually reach, and it is written in Ecclesiastes 3:11 that each thing has its own time.
Three things. One surface. And the inch.
Declare this over yourself
- Apartment made of what four people did not take, you are mine while I live here, and you have never once still belonged to the men who left you. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says each thing is made beautiful in its own time, so by the Holy Spirit I place three of you on purpose, in the name of Jesus.
- Sense that this is a waiting area, you have no claim on these two years. The written word says nobody sees the whole work from beginning to end, and by the Spirit of God I put my hand on something and decide where it sits.
- Father, You made every thing beautiful in its own time, and Your word says no man finds out the whole of what You are making. By Your Spirit I stop reading my own apartment as a verdict, and I place three things on a windowsill tonight.
