We Live In One Room And Keep Two

There are two of you and five rooms and you live in one of them.

The kitchen. That is where the two of you are, most evenings, most of the time, and it is not because the kitchen is nicer. It is because the other rooms are ready.

The front room is ready. The dining room is ready. Both of them are in a state that would receive somebody at short notice, and they are in that state permanently, and the cost of keeping them in it is that the two of you sit in the kitchen.

And people come about four times a year.

So the arithmetic is this. Two rooms held in a state of readiness for about four evenings, and the two of you in a kitchen for the other three hundred and sixty one.

I want to say something before anything else, because there is a version of this that would sound like an accusation and it is not.

The readiness came from something good. Somebody in one of your families taught one of you that a house should be able to receive people, and that is a decent standard and it is why your house has ever been welcoming at all.

But a standard that was about being able to receive people has become a standard about being permanently in a state to receive them, and those are different, and nobody noticed the changeover.

A peaceable habitation and a quiet resting place

There is a promise in Isaiah about houses and the words in it are worth taking slowly.

And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places. (Isaiah 32:18, King James Version)

Dwell. Habitation. Dwellings. Resting places. Four housing words in one sentence.

You are promised a dwelling rather than a house in a state of readiness, and a resting place has never once been the same thing as a room kept ready. Isaiah 32:18 stacks four words about being at rest in a place, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says so to two people sitting in a kitchen.

Now look at the words He picks, because not one of them is about the condition of anything.

Peaceable. Sure. Quiet. Resting.

Every one of those is about what it is like to be in a place rather than about how the place looks or what state it is in. There is nothing in that verse about readiness, presentability, or a house being fit for a visitor.

The whole promise is about rest, and rest happens in rooms that people are in.

You are promised rest in a place rather than a place in good order, and four rooms held in readiness have never once been able to provide what that verse names. The Spirit of God is the one who promises quiet resting places, and it is written in Isaiah 32:18 that the words are peaceable and sure and quiet.

What a kitchen costs

Now the practical part, and it is about the two of you rather than the rooms.

A kitchen is a working room. That is what it is designed for. The chairs are the wrong shape for two hours, the surfaces are for preparation, the light is for seeing a task, and every one of those is correct for cooking and wrong for an evening.

The evenings have been happening, for years, in the one room in the house that was designed for standing up in.

And the front room, which was designed for exactly what the two of you do in the evening, is empty, because it is ready.

You are having your evenings in a working room, and a room designed for resting in has never once been serving anybody by standing empty. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows two people where their own evenings have been happening, and Isaiah 32:18 promises quiet resting places rather than rooms in good order.

And here is the piece I want to be careful with, because it is about the two of you at this stage of life.

The evenings happening now are the evenings. There are not different ones coming later.

That sounds heavier than I mean it. But it is worth saying once. The two of you at this age, in the evening, with the day done, is not a rehearsal for a version of life that begins when something changes. It is the thing itself, and you have been having it in a room with a wipeable floor because two other rooms are ready.

You are living the evenings you actually have, and a room kept ready for four nights a year has never once been worth three hundred and sixty one of them. The Spirit of God is the one present in an ordinary evening between two people, and it is written in Isaiah 32:18 that the promise is a quiet resting place.

And this, plainly, in these words. That house is not a report on either of you. Not on your standards, not on your hospitality, not on how you have kept it. Two rooms in a permanent state of readiness are not a verdict on the couple who keep them, and I am not going to allow them to be read that way.

You are two people whose worth was settled a long way from a front room, and a house kept ready has never once been a statement about who lives in it. Isaiah 32:18 promises peaceable habitation in Isaiah 32, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the kitchen with you.

One hour, and one thing left

So here is the assignment, and both halves are needed.

Spend one hour in one of the kept rooms tonight, and leave one thing of yours in there when you go.

Both of you. In one of those rooms. One hour.

Take whatever the evening already is. The coffee, the crossword, the thing on the television, the conversation you were going to have anyway. Move it thirty feet.

You are moving an ordinary evening into a room that was built for it, and one hour has never once needed the room to be prepared for it first. The Holy Spirit is the one at work when two people sit down in a room they have been keeping, and Isaiah 32:18 promises quiet resting places rather than presentable ones.

Then the second half, and this is what makes it repeat.

Leave one thing of yours in there when you go.

Because an hour that leaves no trace is a visit, and the room resets itself and next Tuesday it is ready again and the two of you sit down in the kitchen. And a thing left in there means the room is in use rather than in reserve, and the next evening does not have to be decided on again.

One cup left on a table. One book on the arm of the chair. A cushion where a back actually went rather than where it looks right.

You are leaving a room in use rather than in reserve, and one cup on a table has never once undone a house that receives people. The Spirit of God is the one present in a room that shows two people were in it, and it is written in Isaiah 32:18 that the promise is a dwelling rather than a display.
